In the journey of life, it's easy to become entangled in the narratives, problems, behaviours and expectations of those around us. For those of us with a natural inclination to help, support, and fix, this tendency can lead us away from our own path, causing us to lose sight of our dreams, goals, and, most importantly, our well-being. The truth is, focusing on our own lane, our own race, and reserving our mental energy to focus on our own breathing can not not only enable us to complete the race but also foster profound healing, restoration and a sense of purpose to continue making a difference in life.

The Power of Focused Attention

Our mental energy is a finite resource, much like the physical energy that fuels our bodies. When we divert this energy outward excessively, trying to rescue or fix others, walking the extra miles without making sure the tank is full, we deplete our reserves without necessarily achieving the intended outcome. This is not to say that we shouldn't support those we care about, but rather, that there's a balance to be struck. By redirecting some of this energy inward, focusing on our own personal growth, aspirations, and self-care, we can achieve a more substantial and fulfilling impact on both our lives and those of others.

The Distraction of External Fixation

For those more outwardly focused, it's a common pitfall to forget about personal dreams and goals. The constant attention to the needs and problems of others can cloud our vision, leaving our aspirations in the shadows. This external fixation can also lead us into cycles of codependency, where our sense of worth and achievement is tied to the successes or failures of those we're trying to help. We learn to take responsibility - only for a few short years for how our children choose to show up in their worlds. As for the rest of the time, we remember that each of us stand or fall before our own master, that times and decisions over the bigger world and others' decisions are within God's power alone and that it is not our right to judge those whom we feel have hurt or harmed their worlds.

Each of us has the power to choose the legacy we wish to leave behind. This choice involves deciding where to invest our energy, time, and talents. By concentrating on our own growth and the impact we wish to have, we can create a legacy that reflects our deepest values and aspirations. This often requires the difficult decision to leave situations where our efforts, respect, and love are not reciprocated. While painful, such decisions are crucial steps in honoring ourselves and ensuring our legacy is one of self-respect and meaningful contribution.

Abuse will never be a trait of our Heavenly Father. The loving person who He is doesn't inspire us to abuse one another. I also believe He will teach those who has the tendency to end up in abusive relationships, that they are loved, and are safe in close relationships that are marked with respect, and care so that they learn to choose more wisely. This foundation of self-love is crucial because it sets the standard for how you treat others and what you recognize as loving behavior.

Extending Love to Others

With a strong foundation of self-love, you're better equipped to extend genuine love and kindness to those around you. Loving your neighbor as yourself means treating others with the same respect, compassion, and understanding that you afford yourself. It's about recognizing the shared humanity in all of us and responding to others' needs, feelings, and well-being with empathy and kindness.

Even in the physical realm, when a loved one has problems with their heart, we take extra special care of them because we know when that hearts stops, they will no longer be able to love us and share life with us. This is the wisdom of Proverbs 4:23 where we also guard our spiritual hearts - the instrument panel that steers our will, soul, mind, affection, and decision making. When our hearts are broken we lose our capacity and even our willingness to open up to love. Receiving love from the One who made us for Himself and also vulnerability to freely love those He placed in our lives.

Creating a Legacy

Ultimately, living by the principle of "Love your neighbor as you love yourself" allows you to create a legacy of love, kindness, and positive impact. It's about making a conscious choice to contribute to the well-being of others, to spread love and compassion in your corner of the world, and to leave situations and relationships better than you found them. By choosing to live this way, you not only enrich your own life but also inspire those around you to do the same.
